About Shepton Mallet Prison

HMP Shepton Mallet in Somerset was closed in 2013 and now lies abandoned. This once lifer prison operated as the oldest jail in England and housed the most hardened and dangerous of criminals including the notorious Kray Twins in the 1950s.

The corridors are now empty and the prison cells devoid of life but the essence of those men and women who were incarcerated here still remains strong. Originally built as a House of Correction in 1625 this prison has a truly terrifying and macabre history.

Much of what has taken place here was brutal and inhumane. In the 17th and 18th Centuries the men, women and children who were imprisoned here lived in the most horrific conditions where they were left to starve in cramped, disease-ridden cells. It is reported that former inmates lie in unmarked graves throughout the massive grounds. Seven executions took place at the prison between 1889 and 1926 but the full number of executions that occurred here prior to this is still unknown.

In the second world war it was adapted as a military prison and used by the British and the Americans. By the end of 1944 sixteen Americans had been hanged and 2 shot by firing squads for crimes that included rape and murder.

Shepton Mallet prison is deemed to be the world's most haunted former prison. Are you brave enough to find out?

Today there are numerous reports from visitors and staff of apparitions, shadow figures, disembodied voices, light anomalies, phantom footsteps and poltergeist activity.
